בהיותו המקום הכי נמוך בעולם, ים המלח ידוע בנופיו המיוחדים, המשלבים מראות פראיים של מדבר יהודה עם פיסול טבעי של הנוף המנוקד בכתמים לבנים של מלח.
ים המלח פופולארי בשל סגולותיו המרפאות ומושך אליו תשומת לב של ארכיאולוגים וחוקרים בשל מורשתו רבת הפנים הן התרבותית והן ההיסטורית.
במהלך העשורים האחרונים, מפלס מימי ים המלח יורד בהתמדה. הצצה במפה עכשווית תגלה, כי ים המלח התכווץ משמעותית וחולק לשני אגנים עיקריים:
האגן הצפוני, אגן מרכזי- יבש מאוד ואגן דרומי שלמעשה התאייד ברובו והפך לבריכות קטנות.

הספר שבכתיבתו השתתפו כ-20 כותבים מספר את סיפורו של ים המלח על כל רבדיו המוכרים יותר ואלה שפחות.
הספר מתאר בחתכי גיאולוגיה, גיאוגרפיה, ארכיאולוגיה, תעשייה, תיירות, התיישבות והיסטוריה את סודותיו של האזור המופלא.

During the last decades, the Dead sea water level is decreasing constantly.
A short glance at an updated map, reveals the Dead Sea dramatic shriveling, dividing it into two separate basins- the northern basin, crowded with ancient cultures remnants as well as modern human settlements, an incredibly beautiful but dried up mid section, and a southern basin which has actually turned into an evaporation area, divided into pools of the Dead Sea plants.
The continued interference in the Dead Sea water system has resulted in increased salt concentration, a decline in the lake's water level and a retreat of the shoreline.
The need to supply water to two thirsty countries and the development of industries that provide income and employment for many families, serve as a platform for the manipulation of the Dead Sea, ignoring an irreplaceable loss.
